Buying a boat on the Moselle — what matters here

The Moselle is lock country. Thirteen barrages lie between Apach and Koblenz, and the leisure-craft locks set practical limits on boat size. If you want to travel further than the next village, watch length, beam and air draught.

Length, beam, draught

On the Luxembourg Moselle almost anything is navigable: the fairway is kept at 3.00 metres depth and about six metres are available under the bridges. It only becomes critical for sailing boats with the mast up and during floods.

Papers you should see

• Sales contract or proof of ownership from previous owners, unbroken
• Boat registration and, where applicable, entry in the inland vessel register
• EC declaration of conformity and design category marking for boats from 1998
• Engine documents, running hours and service records
• For boats from abroad: proof that VAT has been paid

Before the trial run

Have the boat shown to you out of the water, or arrange a viewing when it is craned. Osmosis, hull damage and the condition of shaft and propeller cannot be judged afloat.
