Privacy policy
In short: we collect as little as possible, pass nothing on, do not track and set no advertising cookies.

2. Visiting the website
When you open a page, your browser transmits technically necessary data to the server: IP address, date and time, address requested, volume of data transferred, browser type and operating system.
The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR — our legitimate interest in a secure and functioning service. The logs are deleted after a short period.
3. Hosting
The site is operated at a service provider in Luxembourg. The provider processes data on our behalf under a data processing agreement.
4. Listings
When you post a listing we store the details you enter in the form: title, description, technical data, place, price, photos and your contact details.
Publicly visible are the title, description, technical details, place, price, photos and your name — and your phone number only if you expressly choose that. Your email address is never shown.
The legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR, as the processing is necessary to provide the service you requested. Listings expire after 950 days and are then hidden; deleted listings are removed along with their images. The IP address recorded when posting is kept for up to six months to prevent abuse.
5. Enquiries about listings
If you use a listing's enquiry form, we pass your name, email address, phone number where given and your message text to the seller so they can reply.
6. Contact form
We use the details from the Contact to deal with your request. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, and point (b) for contract-related enquiries. We delete messages once they have been dealt with and no retention obligations stand in the way.
7. User account
An account is optional. We store the email address, name, optionally phone number, place and country, a password hash, plus the time and IP address of registration.
8. Cookies
We use exclusively technically necessary cookies:
- Session cookie — keeps you logged in during the visit and protects forms against third-party access. Deleted when the browser is closed.
- Stay logged in — only if you tick the box when logging in. Expires after sixty days and is removed when you log out.
There are no analytics, tracking or advertising cookies and no embedded social media buttons. The share links on this site are ordinary links: a connection to the network in question is made only when you click one. That is why no cookie banner appears here.
9. Maps
The waterway map uses the Leaflet mapping library and map tiles from OpenStreetMap. When the map is displayed, tiles are loaded from OpenStreetMap Foundation servers, and your IP address is transmitted to them.
The fonts and the mapping library are delivered via a content delivery network. If you want to avoid this, the source code can be switched to local delivery.
9a. Position data (the "Underway" feature)
Anyone using trip recording gives express consent beforehand. Without that consent not a single position is stored. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(a) GDPR.
We store coordinates, time of measurement, accuracy and, where the device provides them, speed, course and altitude. From these we calculate the Moselle kilometre.
Retention: you set it yourself — from "only until the end of the trip" to one year. After that a daily maintenance run deletes the data completely.
Sharing: by default nobody but you sees the positions. If you create a share link, anyone who knows it can see the current position — until the link expires.
Withdrawal: you can withdraw consent at any time with one click. Any running recording stops immediately and all sharing is switched off.
No background tracking: recording happens only while the page is open and a trip is running. We do not operate an app that runs in the background.
9b. Daily assessment ("Go out?")
For this page we retrieve weather forecasts from Open-Meteo and official water levels from PegelOnline. These requests are made from the server, not from your browser — so your IP address is not transmitted to those services. No location detection takes place; you pick the place from a list.
If you ask a follow-up question, the text of your question is sent together with the readings to Anthropic's programming interface. Only your question and the weather context are transmitted — no name, no identifier, no IP address. We do not store the questions.
10. Location request
The map has a "My location" button. It asks your browser for your position — only if you click it and allow the request. The position stays in the browser and is not transmitted to us.
11. Email sending
Confirmations, edit links and forwarded enquiries are sent via our host's mail server. Transmission is transport-encrypted.
iOS app “nautic.lu”
The iPhone app is a reader for this website and an on-board tool. It needs no account, shows no advertising and contains no tracking pixels or tracking libraries.
Location: the app asks for location permission to show the Moselle km, the next lock and to record the trip. The recording — positions, distance, marked spots — stays exclusively on the device. It is not transmitted to nautic.lu or to third parties. To record with the screen locked, the app asks for the “Always” permission; even then no position leaves the device. A GPX export only happens when you trigger it yourself.
Network connections: the app fetches weather from Open-Meteo, water levels from PegelOnline (German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration), and notices to skippers and listings from nautic.lu. Only the selected place or category is transmitted — no device identifier and no GPS position. As with any request, the servers see the IP address; nautic.lu does not store these requests.
Stored on the device: language, boat profile (name, call sign, ATIS, dimensions — all optional), units, trips and marked spots. Deleting the app removes everything. Apple provides us with anonymised usage statistics only if you have allowed this in the iOS settings under “Analytics & Improvements”.
12. Images
Uploaded images are resized and re-saved on the server. Embedded metadata such as the GPS coordinates of the shot are lost in the process — that is intentional.
13. Your rights
You have the right of access to the data held about you, to rectification, to erasure, to restriction of processing, to data portability, and to object to processing based on legitimate interest. An informal message to info@nautic.lu is enough.
You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. For Luxembourg the Commission nationale pour la protection des données is responsible.
