Your destination in detail: Bernkastel-Kues
Bernkastel-Kues is the postcard of the Middle Moselle: half-timbered gables around the Marktplatz, steep vineyards all around and the ruin of Landshut Castle above it all. The pontoons lie on both sides of the bridge — from there you are in the heart of the town within minutes.
The stretch beyond Trier is among the most beautiful of the whole Moselle — loop after loop through the vineyards, with Zeltingen and Ürzig as worthwhile stopovers. Plenty of excursion boats about: watch their wash, especially when mooring and casting off.

- Planned as a weekend trip: the outbound leg with the current is quick — allow more time for the return against it. Same distance, noticeably different passage time.
- At wine-festival time in early September the town is packed and so are the pontoons — arrive early or fall back on the neighbouring villages.
- The climb to Landshut Castle takes a good half hour and rewards you with the best view over the river loop — walking shoes on board are worth it.
